About
Yun Chen is a Chinese-Canadian artist. In her works, subjects resist full expression. Figures, objects, and forms are withheld just enough to remain unresolved. Her practice challenges the viewer's retina into either recognizing or rejecting signals embedded within layers of oil paint, drawing them into an anonymous territory between the canvas surface and the body. Through painting hyper-realistic metallic facades and playing with material deception, she constructs this threshold deliberately. She is interested in navigating the narrow border between what can and what cannot be perceived, embedding just enough information to invite active cognitive participation without guaranteeing it. The viewer's biological retina may accept or refuse the invitation entirely. It is precisely this instability that interests her, the possibility of a co-created territory that can only be inhabited through non-dominant forms of perception.
